ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A balanced scoring attack led the Roberts Wesleyan women's basketball team to a 68-56 win over the University of Bridgeport on Friday night in the Voller Athletic Center.
Four players scored in double digits for the Redhawks with sophomore
Taya Andrews leading the way with 13 points.
Lucy Covley,
Emily Miller and
Tashayla Sutorius all chipped in with 11 points each.
Roberts took a 10 point lead with six minutes left in the first half, but the Purple Knights used a 13-4 run to close out the half and bring the score within one point to make the halftime score 30-29 in favor of the Redhawks.
After a back-and-forth third quarter that never saw a lead more than two points the Redhawks turned it on late in the fourth quarter with back-to-back three pointers by Covley. The senior's triple with 4:10 left in the game gave Roberts a six point lead and Covley's next three pointer with 2:55 left brought the score to 60-51.
Roberts was 28 of 68 (41.2%) from the field in the game while Bridgeport was 23 of 68 (33.8%).
Despite being outsized by the tall Bridgeport forwards the Redhawks managed to outscore the Purple Knights in the paint, 36-26.
Roberts advances to 14-6 overall and 8-2 in the East Coast Conference. The Redhawks will host Mercy on Sunday with a 2 p.m. tipoff in the Voller Athletic Center.
