ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Roberts Wesleyan women's volleyball team didn't shy away from the No. 1 team in the East Coast Conference when Daemen visited the Voller Athletic Center on Friday evening, but the Redhawks couldn't find a way to pull off the upset dropping the match 3-1 to the Wildcats.
The Redhawks used a five point run in the first set to take a 13-12 lead midway through the first set. The teams then traded points and it was Roberts who got to set point first with the score 24-22, but Daemen stormed back with four straight points to close out the set and go up 1-0 in the match.
Following a less competitive second set that saw the Wildcats run away with a 25-16 win the Redhawks came back in the third set determined to keep the match alive. Roberts jumped out to a 7-2 lead and continued to pour on the attack resulting in a 25-18 set three win.
The fourth set was again tightly contested with neither team able to take a large lead. Roberts had the advantage at 23-22, but it was the experience of the Wildcats that closed out the match on a three point run and take a 3-1 victory.
Kristina Button led the Redhawks with 10 kills on 19 total attempts (.368). Freshman
Lauren Taeko Chase had 33 assists. Defensively,
Shelby Strausbaugh came up with 21 digs and
Anastasia Smith finished with three blocks.
Roberts Wesleyan (3-14, 2-6 ECC) will travel to NYIT and LIU Post next week.
