Redhawks Shock No. 8 Mercy, 3-1

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Roberts Wesleyan men's soccer team stunned No. 8 Mercy at home on Wednesday night with a 3-1 win over the East Coast Conference leaders.

Heading into the game the Redhawks looked outmatched on paper. The 8-1-1 (5-1 ECC) Mavericks were ranked eighth in the country and No. 1 in the East Region while the Redhawks were on a four game losing streak and winless in the conference.

But it was Roberts who controlled the game scoring the first three goals before allowing Mercy to get on the board in the second half.

Freshman Dylan Ruiz provided two goals for the Redhawks. His first came in the 30th minute when he took a pass at the top of the 18 yard box from Karl McNulty and placed a shot in the top right corner of the net. The Mexico City native scored his second of the day at the 54:41 mark of the second half when he collected a ball in the box after a free kick and beat the keeper low to the left side.

Just five minutes later fellow freshman Aaryn Massy scored his first career goal for Roberts to make the score 3-0. Massy got his head on the end of a Terrell Spencer cross to give the Redhawks a big advantage.

Mercy was able to avoid being shutout with a goal in the 64th minute. The goal was scored by Ignacio Mangada.

Senior goalkeeper Ben Hastings played all 90 minutes making four saves.

The victory gave the Redhawks their first win in the conference this season and push their record to 4-7-3 (1-5-1 ECC).

Roberts Wesleyan will travel to Molloy and Pitt-Johnstown for the next two matches before returning home for the final game of the season on Oct. 27 at 5 p.m.
