Women's Basketball Falls to Queens

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Roberts Wesleyan women's basketball team battled back from a 14 point deficit against Queens College on Friday, but couldn't find a way to pull out the win as the Redhawks fell, 57-55.

It was a tough shooting night for the Redhawks as the team was 22-of-62 (35.5%) from the field and just 7-of-28 (25%) from three point range. The struggles on offense allowed Queens to build a 14 point lead in the second quarter putting the Knights up 34-20. Roberts was able to cut the deficit to single digits before the half but Queens held a 36-27 advantage at the midway break.

The Redhawks jumped out to a quick start in the second half with back-to-back three pointers from Lucy Covley and Taya Andrews, cutting the Knights' lead to just three. With 4:40 remaining in the third quarter the Redhawks gained the lead, but couldn't put any distance between them and the visitors. Queens took the lead back for good with 8:38 left in the fourth, but Roberts hung around and had several chances to retake the lead with under two minutes remaining but were unable to capitalize on the opportunity.

With 15 seconds on the clock and the score in favor of the Knights, 54-52, Andrews was fouled and went to the line for two shots. The sophomore missed the first, but hit the second. Queen's guard Beth Bonin was fouled on the ensuing inbounds and nailed both her free throws to take a 56-53 lead. Following a Redhawks' timeout Andrews shot a contested three that went long.

Andrews led the Redhawks as the only double digit scorer with 19 points.

For Queens, Taliyah Hopkins finished with a team high 26 points.

Roberts (17-8, 11-4 ECC)will hold their final home game of the season on Saturday when they take on Molloy at 2 p.m.
