HOUGHTON, N.Y. - The Roberts Wesleyan men's tennis team opened the spring portion of their season with a 6-3 victory over a scrappy Houghton College team.
The Redhawks opened the match by winning two of the three doubles matches. Sophomore
Dennis Barlotta and freshman
Guido Janssen opened the scoring with an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles. Senior co-captains
Hugo Ball-Greene and
Jose Carrillo followed with an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles.
In singles play, Carrillo defeated Bjorn Webb, 6-0, 6-0 at sixth singles. Barlotta then extended the lead with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jake Fisher at No. 4 singles. Janssen then clinched the match for Roberts with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Lous Garcia at third singles. Ball-Greene closed out the scoring for Roberts with a hard fought 7-6(4), 6-3 win over Zach Shilvock at first singles. Houghton closed the gap with wins at No. 2 and No. 5 singles.
"This was a hard fought match and I am proud of how we stayed focused and adapted," said head coach
Tom Linhart.
The 3-1 Redhawks next match is Sunday against crosstown rival RIT. The match will be played at Midtown Athletic Club starting at 3 p.m.
