SPARKILL, N.Y. / FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Roberts Wesleyan men's tennis team began East Coast Conference play over the weekend dropping back-to-back matches to St. Thomas Aquinas and Queens. The Redhawks fell to STAC in a competitive, 5-4 match followed by a 9-0 loss at Queens.
In Friday's matchup against STAC the Redhawks saw the Spartans sneak away with the victory. The No. 2 doubles team of
Dustin Eshleman and
Dennis Barlotta picked up a 7-5 win over Aaron Stahl and Paul Voigt.
In singles play, the Redhawks received wins at the No.1, No.2 and No. 6 spots. Top singles player
Hugo Ball-Greene won a nail-biter against Stahl, 3-6, 7-6, 6-3.
Guido Janssen won a 6-2, 6-3 decision in the second slot and
Matthew Cruz had the win at No. 6 (7-5, 6-7, 10-7).
On Saturday, the Redhawks faced a tough opponent in Queens who is second in the ITA East Region rankings.
Ball-Greene and Janssen played a competitive match at No. 1 doubles falling 9-8 (8-6). Janssen also had a tough matchup at No. 2 singles but fell to Cosme Jubera, 7-5, 6-3.
Roberts has now lost seven consecutive matches but will look to turn things around on Thursday, March 29 when they take on Concordia College of New York.
