Fourth Quarter Surge Gives Redhawks Pivotal Win Over UDC

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Six unanswered goals to close out the game helped propel the Roberts Wesleyan men's lacrosse team over East Coast Conference opponent University of the District of Columbia on Saturday afternoon in a pivotal conference matchup. The Redhawks won the game 10-7.

Senior Alex Bianchi got the scoring streak started for the Redhawks with a goal in third quarter with 2:57 remaining. Bianchi's goal brought the Redhawks to within two of the Firebirds, 7-5.

Roberts dominated the fourth quarter scoring five goals and not allowing UDC to get on the board. Five different players scored a goal in the final period of play. John Wellington kicked off the scoring in the fourth with a goal at the 9:06 mark. Kyle Dunham's goal just over one minute later tied the game at 7-7 and then Collin Waden scored the game winner at the 6:06 mark to give the Redhawks an 8-7 advantage. Hunter Lemieux and Bianchi added insurance goals in the final five minutes of the quarter.

Defensively the Redhawks stepped up in the fourth quarter holding the Firebirds to just seven shots while also forcing six turnovers. Starting goalkeeper Pat Hynes made 16 saves in net to pick up the win.

Bianchi and Dunham both finished with three goals while Bianchi added two assists and Dunham had one. Cody Menzies and Matt Gademske each had two assists in the game.

Roberts Wesleyan (6-7, 2-3 ECC) currently sits in fourth place in the ECC standings ahead of Molloy College who holds a 1-3 conference mark after an overtime win against Saint Thomas Aquinas on Saturday. The top four teams will make it to post season play. Roberts and Molloy will face off next Saturday at 3 p.m. in Rockville Centre, N.Y. The winner of that game will earn the fourth and final seed into the ECC playoffs.
