Men's Basketball Picks Up Home Win on Alumni Weekend

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Five players scored double digits to give the Roberts Wesleyan men's basketball team an 87-59 win over the University of the District of Columbia on Friday night in the Voller Athletic Center.

Justin Vaughan led in the scoring category with 20 points to go along with six rebounds and two steals. Both Peyton McLaurin and Jean Toussaint had double-doubles. McLaurin dropped in 14 points and pulled down 14 rebounds while Toussaint added 10 points and 10 rebounds. Armon Nasseri and Brendan Banna both came up clutch off the bench with 16 points and 10 points respectively.

It was an efficient shooting day for the Redhawks as the team finished 33-of-70 (47.1%) from the field. UDC shot just 28-percent from the field on 18-of-64 shooting. Roberts was able to get the ball inside for the majority of the game and dominated the paint. The Redhawks outscored the Firebirds 42-24 in the paint.

Roberts also received a big boost from its role players, getting 36 points from the bench. In addition to Nasseri and Banna combing for 26 points, Jordan Henry and Reggie Clark each had five points.

With the score knotted at 11-11 early on the Redhawks went on a 14-2 run to begin stretching the lead. During that span the Redhawks held UDC without a made field goal for seven minutes. Roberts took a double digit lead and continued to build distance to hold an 18 point lead at the half.

In the second half the Redhawks were able to fend off any UDC comeback attempt and put the game out of reach. At the 5:18 mark a three pointer by Vaughan gave Roberts a 31 point lead. With under two minutes to play the lead was extended to 36 points after a Clark nailed a long range shot.

The 28 point difference was the largest margin of victory for the Redhawks this season.

Roberts Wesleyan (8-7, 4-4 ECC) have won two straight and sit in fourth place in the East Coast Conference behind St. Thomas Aquinas. The Redhawks and Spartans will play on Sunday, Jan. 27 in the VAC at 4 p.m.
