SAINT LEO, Fla. - The Roberts Wesleyan women's basketball team defeated West Florida day one of the Hampton Inn Classic 57-46 on Friday afternoon.
Three Redhawks scoring in double digits made all the difference for Roberts with Taryn Wilson leading the way. The sophomore was able to tack on 16 points against West Florida as well as eight rebounds and two assists. Sara Nady was the second Redhawk with 12 points and Dimitra Gkizani with ten.
The first quarter started in favor of the Argonauts outscoring Roberts 14 to nine but the Redhawks were able to capture the lead at the start of the second quarter and continued to build momentum tying up the game with three minutes remaining in the half.
Roberts held on during the third quarter where the lead changed hands a total of three times but then ten point run at the start of the fourth quarter, capitalizing on some of the Argonauts 18 turnovers, giving the Redhawks the boost they needed to top West Florida.
The team was 18-for-56 (32.1%) from the field, 9-for-34 (26.5%) from the three point line and went 12-for-18 (66.7%) on foul shots.
Up next, Roberts will compete in day two of the Hampton Inn Classic tomorrow as they take on Saint Leo University. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
