ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Roberts Wesleyan men's tennis team opened its spring campaign with a 9-0 win over local rival Rochester Institute of Technology.
Using NCAA Division III scoring the Redhawks jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead when they swept the the doubles portion of the match. Freshman
Matthew Forrest extended the Redhawks lead with a straight sets win over Pat Matthews at 4
th singles. Shorty after that, sophomore
Guido Janssen clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Brennan Bull at first singles. Senior co-captain
Boyd Blackburn added to the lead with a 6-2, 6-1 lead over Spencer Lowitt at second singles. Junior
Dennis Barlotta and Senior Andrew Freemen closed out the scoring with straight set wins at 5
th and 6
th singles.
"This was a closer match than the score indicated," said head coach
Tom Linhart. "The RIT team is well coached and plays hard, we just never let them get into their rhythm. We played with excellent intensity that will be needed as we start the Division II portion of our schedule."
The 3-2 Redhawks next matches are February 20 when they travel to Vermont to play St.Michaels College and then to Massachusetts to take on Assumption College.
