ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A comeback attempt came up short on Wednesday night as the Roberts Wesleyan women's volleyball team stormed back from two games down, but fell in the fifth set to drop a 3-2 decision to The College at Brockport.
Through the first two sets it was all Brockport, winning the first set 25-14 and the second, 25-16. The Redhawks could not muster up consistent offense getting zero kills in the second set off just 12 attempts. Leading the attack for Brockport was senior Lindsey Luce who ended the night with 15 kills.
The third set seemed to mirror the first two with the Golden Eagles jumping out to a 15-7 advantage but Roberts found a way to rally back, scoring seven straight points to bring the score to 15-14. A short while later a kill by
Lauren Norwood gave the Redhawks the lead at 18-17. Brockport answered with a six point run and held a 23-19 lead but Roberts found a way to score the final six points of the set to win the set 25-23.
The back-and-forth fourth set never saw a lead of more than three points but it was senior
Anastasia Smith who helped cap off the 25-23 set win. Smith's kill gave the Redhawks a 24-23 lead and then the senior provided a block on the final point.
Despite the momentum of the comeback the Redhawks couldn't carry that into the fifth and final set as Brockport took an 11-0 lead and would move on to a 15-3 set win to seal the match.
Outside hitter
Amanda Greenwood finished with nine kills to lead Roberts. Defensively,
Rachel Holmes came up with 19 digs and Smith added in three blocks.
Roberts Wesleyan (0-5) will head to the Millersville Tournament this weekend for four matches starting on Friday at 4 p.m.
