Walsh Goal in Second Overtime Period Hands Redhawks Loss

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – An overtime goal in the 105th minute handed the Roberts Wesleyan men's soccer team a season-opening loss on Thursday night as Walsh University walked away with a 3-2 victory.

Momentum favored the Redhawks early on as the team put on the offensive pressure resulting in an early shot on goal by sophomore Marc-Anthony Blackburn in the third minute. But despite the attack by Roberts, it was Walsh who came up with the first goal on the game. Myles Cornwall's cross was deflected in by Peyton Barnes in the sixth minute of play.

The Redhawks responded less than five minutes later following a set piece just outside the box. With two quick short passes sophomore Dylan Ruiz found the back of the net with a shot 18 yards out. Assists were credited to Terrell Spencer and Alex Perez Vega.

Three minutes after dishing out an assist Spencer added his first goal of the season in the 14th minute to give Roberts a 2-1 lead.

The Redhawks held the lead for the remainder of the half but suffered a blow earlier in the half when Ruiz was sent off with a red card leaving Roberts a man down.

In the second half the Cavaliers were the aggressor on offense, taking advantage of the Redhawks numbers disadvantage. Walsh outshot Roberts 10-3 in the second half and got the game tying goal in the 84th minute from Dwight van Dyke.

After a scoreless first overtime period the Cavaliers finished the game with a goal in the 105th minute by Cornwall who assisted on the games' first goal.

Joe McNulty played the entire game in goal making five total saves. Spencer was the leader offensively for Roberts with six total shots and three on goal.

Roberts Wesleyan (0-1-0) will be back at it again on Saturday in a home matchup against Malone University. Kickoff is at 3:30 p.m.
