ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A full 90 minutes plus an additional twenty minutes of overtime wasn't enough for the Roberts Wesleyan men's soccer team to break a tie against Malone University on Saturday afternoon as the two teams finished the game in a 1-1 draw.
Malone got on the board first with a goal in the 41st minute by Nathan McFeaters. The goal came after McFeaters found a rebounded ball at his feet in front of the goal following a corner kick. Malone took the 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
Roberts tied the game at 1-1 when sophomore
Alex Perez Vega buried a penalty kick. The goal is Vega's first of the season. The sophomore nearly gave Roberts the advantage in the 77th minute when his shot forced Malone's keeper to make a difficult save pushing the ball over the crossbar.
Neither team was able to get much going offensively in the first overtime period but the second extra period provided two chances for Roberts that could have sent the Redhawks off with a win. Freshman
Hunter Salisbury took an open shot just twelve yards out with the visitor's goalkeeper out of position, but a Malone defender was able to block the shot on the goal line. Just a minute later it was
Jaheed Loblack with an open header in front of net that went high.
Malone outshot the Redhawks 20-to-15. Senior goalkeeper
Joe McNulty made 11 saves in net to help keep the score even.
Roberts (0-1-1) will head to Manchester, N.H. on Wednesday for a matchup against Saint Anselm College. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
