ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Redshirt freshman
Amari Lee notched his first career triple-double on Friday night, but the Roberts men's basketball team couldn't find a way to upset the University of Bridgeport at home, losing 85-77.
Lee's very rare triple-double came with the stat line of 17 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists in 38 minutes of action on the night. The starting guard also had two steals. But the fast paced Bridgeport offense and full court press defense gave the Redhawks all they could handle.
It wasn't a pretty start for Roberts as the Purple Knights scored the game's first 15 points. With the game looking to get out of hand early on the Redhawks found a way to rally back and come within three points of the lead before the end of the first half. At the break Bridgeport led 33-30.
Roberts made the first bucket of the second half cutting the lead to just one point, but then a 13-2 run by Bridgeport gave the visitors some breathing room. UB would hold a double digit lead until late in the second half when the Redhawks nearly found a way back into the game.
The Redhawks cut a 13 point deficit to just four points in a two minute stretch. With less than one minute to play in regulation the Purple Knights knocked down crucial free throws to ice the game. Bridgeport went 9-of-12 from the charity stripe, including 6-of-7 in the second half alone. Roberts was exceptional from the line going 21-of-25 on the night.
Armon Nasseri was the game's leading scorer with 24 points. Bridgeport got double digit scoring from five different players. Bakary Camara led the team with 19 points.
Next up for the Redhawks is another East Coast Conference matchup when Queens College visits the Voller Athletic Center on Sunday at 4 p.m.
