Rochester, N.Y. - Roberts Wesleyan's Women's Basketball team returned to the hardwood for their first game of the season Tuesday night where they took on Bryant & Stratton of Buffalo, NY. The Redhawks ended their first game of 2021 victorious, beating the Bobcats 75-62.
Ending their 2019-2020 season just days before being sent home due to COVID-19, the Redhawks were ready to get back to competition. While the Bobcats made it onto the scoreboard first, starting Sophomore Guard Madison McCormick netted 3 of her 6 points to put the Redhawks ahead for the rest of the game.Â
Four of the Redhawks ended the game scoring double-digits. Dimitra Gkizani recorded a double-double with a game high 15 points and 12 rebounds. Shooting 88% from the field, Gkizani added 2 blocks, 2 assists, and a steal to her stat line. Senior transfer Paige McCormick and Freshman Toni Neely-Primus scored 14 points each, while Junior Guard Taryn Wilson scored 13 points, brought down 7 rebounds, and had 2 steals to round out the starters.Â
Roberts Wesleyan out-rebounded Bryant & Stratton 54-39 with the Bobcats taking 27 more shots than the Redhawks. Shooting 47% from the field, 42% from three, and 69% from the free throw line, the Redhawks proved to be too much for Bryant & Stratton.
"I think our team's word for this year is resilience and they've really shown that," Head Coach Kevin Clifford remarked. "They've bounced back, they've come back, they've done everything we've asked them to do."
The Redhawks return for their next game on Tuesday, January 19th against Mercyhurst University. Tip-off is slated for 7 pm. We encourage you to check out the live stream to support the Redhawks.
