Redhawks Week in Review: January 18-24

Women's Basketball

In last week's women's basketball action Roberts split a pair of home contests with a 55-42 loss to Mercyhurst followed by a 70-52 win over Clarion University.

Women's Basketball falls to Mercyhurst, 1/19

In Tuesday's loss against Mercyhurst both teams shot poorly from the field resulting in a low scoring game. Mercyhurst came out with the slight edge going 19-of-54 (35.2%) from the field and 3-of-18 (16.7%) from 3-point range. The Redhawks struggled to find the bottom of the net throughout the game shooting just 18-of-67 (26.9%) from the field and just 1-of-17 (5.9%) from beyond the arc.

Dimitra Gkizani led the team with 12 points and seven rebounds.

Women's Basketball tops Clarion, 1/22

Roberts rebounded quickly from the loss with a decisive victory over Clarion on Friday night. While the first half included seven lead changes and four ties, the Redhawks dominated the second quarter outscoring Clarion 24-10 to take the lead going into the half. Roberts continued to outscore the Golden Eagles in the second half to march on to its second win of the season.

Senior transfer Paige McCormick paced the Redhawks with a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds. The Heuvelton, N.Y. native also had four steals and five assists on the night. Junior guard Taryn Wilson scored 14 points and Junior center Dimitra Gkizani rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points and 9 rebounds.

Men's Basketball

The Roberts Wesleyan men's basketball team had a busy last week of three games, including two on the road. The Redhawks dropped its first game of the week to Mercyhurst 88-56 followed by a loss on the road to Clarion University 80-77. But Roberts responded on Sunday afternoon with a 20 point victory (86-66) in its second game of a back-to-back with Clarion. 

Men's Basketball downed by Mercyhurst, 1/19

The Redhawks traveled to Erie, Pennsylvania Tuesday night to face off against the Lakers. Mercyhurst converted in the first half after a slow offensive start from the Redhawks, taking the lead by 20 going into halftime. The Lakers forced 24 turnovers by the Redhawks and took 17 more shots, edging out our team 88-56.

Two Redhawks ended in double-digits. Isaiah Lewis recorded 11 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists while Fope Okuyiga finished with 10 points and 4 rebounds. Roberts Wesleyan finished the game shooting 43% (23-for-54) from the field, 22% from three (4-for-18), and 75% from the free throw line (6-for-8).

Men's Basketball loses in double-OT to Clarion, 1/22

Men's Basketball returned to Pennsylvania Friday night to take on Clarion University for the first time. The Redhawks led throughout the first half, taking a 38-34 lead into halftime. The Golden Eagles managed to outscore the Redhawks in the second half to force the game into two overtimes where they came out on top, 80-77.

Clarion managed to shoot 53% (29-for-55) from the field compared to Roberts Wesleyan's 38% (28-for-73). The Golden Eagles managed to out-rebound the Redhawks 42-37 and had 33 bench points opposed to the Redhawks' 20. Senior Reggie Clark ended the game scoring 18 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. Armon Nasseri netted 12 points and brought down 9 rebounds while Isaiah Lewis scored 11 points to round out the double-digit scorers. 

Men's Basketball gets redemption against Clarion, 1/24

Clarion University made the trip to Rochester Sunday afternoon to face the Redhawks for the second time in just three days. The Redhawks came out with vengeance after the double-overtime loss Friday night. A hot start for the Redhawks proved to be too much for the Golden Eagles as Roberts Wesleyan won, 86-66.

The Redhawks started the game with a 22-3 run within the first ten minutes of the game. While Clarion managed to come back to within 9 in the second half, a disciplined showing by Roberts kept the Golden Eagles at bay. Roberts out-rebounded Clarion 44-36 and shot 51% from the field (33-for-65) and 47% from three (9-for-19). Senior Center Armon Nasseri finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds, recording his first double-double of the season. Reggie Clark scored 15 points and grabbed 8 rebounds while Isaiah Lewis and Amari Lee ended with 12 and 11 points respectively.

Upcoming Games

Women's Basketball (2-1, 0-0 ECC) returns to the Voller Athletic Center Tuesday night at 7 pm to compete against Gannon University for the first time in program history. Men's Basketball (2-2, 0-0 ECC) takes a short hiatus as they return February 3rd to play D'Youville College in Buffalo for their first ECC game of the season. Tip off is set for 6 pm. Their next home game is slated for Saturday, February 6th at 1 pm versus Daemen College.
