ROCHESTER, N.Y. – You don't need to look far to find the keys to the Roberts Wesleyan College women's basketball team's 67-54 non-conference victory over Mansfield University on Tuesday night.
The Redhawks (2-1) went 15-for-15 from the free-throw line and outscored the Mountaineers 40-12 in the paint.
"We made more free throws than they took (10) and that's always a good thing," Roberts head coach
Kevin Clifford said. "We've been working on the post passing game, too, and tonight it paid off."
Senior guard
Taryn Wilson led four Redhawks in double figures with 15 points. Sophomore
Danielle DiCintio contributed a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, senior center
Dimitra Gkizani added 12 points and eight rebounds and sophomore
Toni Neely-Primus added 10 points and seven rebounds.
"I just try to do whatever I can do best to help the team win," said DiCintio, who made two of her 3-pointers in the third quarter as Roberts doubled its 27-22 halftime lead by outscoring Mansfield 19-14 .
Wilson and Neely-Prius each went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line while
Georgia Haverlock (9 points) went 3-for-3 and
Grace Dow and
Nyah Johnson each made both of their attempts.
"Every practice coach makes us shoot free throws at the end and if we don't make them we have to run," DiCintio said. "And we don't like to run, so we make our free throws."
Roberts outrebounded Mansfield 46-35, including 37-22 on the defensive end. The Redhawks also heated up from the floor in the second half, converting 15 of their 29 shots.
Paige Whitfield led Mansfield with 18 points.
"I am proud of the way our team played tonight," Clifford said. "Everyone brought a ton of energy."
Roberts travels to Painesville, Ohio, on Thursday for a 7 p.m. game against Lake Erie College.
