AMHERST, N.Y. – The Roberts Wesleyan College women's basketball team opened the East Coast Conference portion of its schedule on Wednesday night.
The Redhakws, who captured their first ECC Tournament championship at Daemen College in March, dropped an 86-43 decision to the host Wildcats.
"We played hard and we didn't give up," Roberts head coach
Kevin Clifford said. "They had four players score in double figures, so you have to give them credit."
Daemen opened the game on a 7-0 run and led the entire way. Senior
Dimitra Gkizani and sophomore
Georgia Haverlock each scored nine points to lead Roberts (2-4, 0-1 ECC). Gkizani added five rebounds and
Danielle DiCintio paced the Redhawks with four assists.
Daemen scored 26 points off turnovers and received 29 points from its reserves. The Wildcats also connected on 18 of 32 3-point field goals.
"I think this is a game that we need to remember and learn from," Clifford said. "We told the players after the game that it is not how you start, it's how you finish."
The Redhawks return to action on Friday for a non-conference game at The College of Saint Rose before returning home for a conference game against D'Youville at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Sunday's game benefits the Pirate Toy Fund and any fan who brings a new, unwrapped toy will be admitted for free.
