Redhawks Women's Basketball Week in Review: March 1-7

Women's Basketball Takes Down STAC to Advance to ECC Finals, 3/4

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - A second-place finish in the conference meant that the Redhawks were playing their first play-off game at home against the third-place St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans. During the regular season, the Redhawks split games with STAC down in Sparkill, N.Y., so a home-court advantage was key in the postseason victory.

The Redhawks started the game hot, ending the first quarter with a 16-7 edge. The Spartans went on a 20-10 scoring streak in the second quarter to go into the half on top, 27-26. The Redhawks used the break to regain their composure and come out determined in the second half. Solid offensive and defensive play kept the Redhawks ahead, outscoring the Spartans in both the third and fourth quarters.

The final-four game was played very evenly with both teams shooting close to 40% from the field. The Redhawks shot 24-for-57 (42.1%) from the field, 8-for-20 (40%) from three, and 6-for-10 (60%) from the free throw line. They outrebounded the Spartans 35-31 and had 26 points in the paint compared to STAC's 14.

Four of the Redhawks starters scored in double-digits, making up most of the score. Sophomore Madison McCormick and Junior Taryn Wilson notched 15 points each. McCormick shot an impressive 5-for-7 from the field and 5-for-6 from three. Wilson played a well-rounded game with 9 rebounds, 6 steals, and 3 assists. Junior Dimitra Gkizani finished with 14 points and 8 rebounds while Senior Paige McCormick recorded 10 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists. Coming off the bench, Freshman Danielle DiCintio recorded a season-high 7 assists.

Women's Basketball Wins Their First-Ever ECC Championship, 3/6

AMHERST, N.Y. - The Redhawks traveled to Daemen Saturday afternoon to compete in the East Coast Conference Championship game. This was the Redhawks second trip to the Championship in the DII era, with the last time being in 2016. A dominant performance by the Redhawks let the nationally-ranked Wildcats take the lead one time in the first quarter, but never gave it up until the final buzzer. For the first time, the Roberts Wesleyan Women's Basketball team won the ECC Championships and are headed to the NCAA Tournament.

A Look at the NCAA Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS, I.N. - After the Redhawks historic weekend, they celebrated their victory by watching their name appear in the NCAA Division II Championship bracket for the first time in program history. Women's Basketball will be competing in the East Region bracket with 5 other teams from the East Coast Conference, Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, and North-east 10 Conference. Roberts will be competing in the Round of 48 as the 5th seed in the East.

Coming in first place with a bye is CACC Champion Dominican College (12-1) of the CACC. Nationally-ranked Daemen (12-2) took the second spot and also received a bye in the first round. The Wildcats will be hosting the East Region games on their campus. The three seed is CACC Championship runner-up Georgian Court (8-1), who will be facing six seed Concordia University (6-5). Roberts first game will be played against fourth seeded American International (7-1), the only NE-10 team making the list.

The Redhawks will face the Yellow Jackets on Friday, March 12th at Daemen College. Being less than an hour away from campus and having significant experience playing there gives Roberts the opportunity to continue where they left off from the ECC Championship. Tip-off time is TBA.

All regional games will be played March 12th, 13th, and 15th. Continue to check the website for updates, game times, and live stream links while showing our Redhawks your support. For more information on the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Championship, click here.
