REDHAWKS COMEBACK FALLS SHORT AGAINST NO. 12 FROSTBURG

FROSTBURG, Md. - The Roberts Wesleyan men's lacrosse team staged a valiant comeback but came up one goal short, falling 11-10 to No. 12 Frostburg State in an East Coast Conference game Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium.

The Redhawks (6-4), trailed 9-7 entering the fourth quarter, but cut the Frostburg (6-2) lead to one twice before time ran out. Roberts had three opportunities to tie the game in the final 90 seconds but was unable to convert.

"We were down, but we came back and never gave up," Redhawks coach Rocky Delfino said. 

Senior Hunter Lemieux led Roberts with four goals and two assists and senior Nate Maloney finished with two goals and two assists. Maloney converted a feed from Lemieux to make the score 11-10 with 1:39 to play.

Junior Michael Pierog finished with a goal and two assists and senior Matt Gademske had a goal and an assist for the Redhawks. Sophomore Reid Jackowski and freshman Jordon Deats also scored for Roberts.

Senior Pat Hynes was strong in the cage, making 14 saves for Roberts and senior Mitch Streety went 13-for-24 on faceoffs and led the Redhawks with six ground balls.

Delfino was proud of his team's effort across the board.

"Colin Vandewater(4 ground balls) played out of his mind and so did Jake Sparks, another senior defenseman," Delfino said. "

Pierog's goal with 4:20 remaining in the first quarter gave Roberts a 3-2 lead, but the Bobcats held the Redhawks scoreless for the next 20:32 and took a 6-3 lead into the halftime break.

The Frostburg run included a goal by Matthew Ward with four-tenths of a second remaining in the half. 

The Redhawks responded well to the last-second goal, as Lemieux, Gademske and Nate Maloney to tie the game 6-6 with 12:28 to play in the third quarter.

"They know that they can do it," Delfino said of his team's ability to come back. "We've been down before and they know what to do." 

Frostburg scored the next three before sophomore Jackowski unleashed a beautiful behind-the-back bounce shot for a goal with with 43.7 left in the third quarter. 

The Bobcats struck first with 10:52 to play in the fourth but Lemieux scored his fourth of the game with 6:07 left and Roberts pulled closer when Deats scored with 4:10 left.

Frostburg scored a man-up goal to restore its two-goal advantage with 2:32 left before Maloney closed out the scoring.

Roberts, which received votes in the most recent ICLA poll, completed its regular season and will return to action in the ECC Tournament at a date and time to be announced.

"We know we can play," Delfino said. "We just have to come out and execute."
