ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY – It looked like the Roberts Wesleyan College men's soccer team would roll to a victory in its East Coast Conference opener on Saturday.
Roberts outshot host Molloy College 12-0 in the first half, including several high-quality chances, but the Redhawks' inability to convert cost them in a 2-1 loss to the Lions.
"We played some of the best soccer that we have played all season and we just couldn't score," Roberts head coach
Scott Reber said. Â "We rang one off the post and their keeper made some great saves."
Roberts eventually broke through in the 48
th minute when sophomore
Tamas Nagy scored his first collegiate goal off a beautiful feed from
Nathan Ferguson. Junior
Justin Robertson started the play by winning the ball in his own end and carrying the ball into the offensive third.
"It kind of looked like that would be the tipping point and we would start pouring it on from there," Reber said.
Unfortunately for the Redhawks, Molloy tied the game in the 58
th minute and scored the eventual winner in the 71
st minute.
Roberts (2-4, 0-1 ECC) made a push in the late stages, but Molloy's Nick Conklu (seven saves) was equal to the challenge. The Redhawks held a 17-6 advantage in shots for the match.
"Their keeper had a phenomenal day," Reber said. "They took advantage of their opportunities and we didn't, that's what it comes down to."
Junior
Jared Gibbons made two saves for Roberts, which returns to action at 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 25 for a Homecoming match against ECC rival Mercy.
"We are going to take a couple of days off," Reber said. "When we come back on Tuesday, we've got to start grinding and get back after it."
