ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Saturday afternoon's women's soccer home opener seemed to be going the way of the Redhawks as the team controlled the pace of the game and dominated in the offensive end of the field, but it was Nyack who ended up on the winning end, 2-1 with a game-winner in double overtime.
After a scoreless first half, Nyack got on the board first in the 56
th minute on a goal from senior forward Zion Dewerff, assisted on by sophomore midfielder Anna-Lena Gilbert.
With time winding down in regulation the Redhawks tied the game up with a goal from junior forward
Olivia Grande in the 89
th minute of play.
Jessica Savage provided the assist.
The Warriors made the most of their shots scoring two goals on the only two shots they had on frame all game. The second was the game-winner when Shanice Rapp's volley from 20 yards out looped over Redhawks' goalkeeper
Nicolette Knauf into the back of the net.
"It was fantastic to be on our home field today," said head coach
Sarah McClellan. "It's been a long time coming. I thought the team really showed well in many moments today. The possession, shots, corner kicks and opportunities certainly were in our favor, so that was great to see and if we can continue to build on that the results will come."
Roberts certainly had far more opportunities over the visitors. The Redhawks combined for 15 shots with eight on target. The team also created 13 corner kick chances but was unable to capitalize on those set pieces.
Roberts drops to 0-2 to start the season but will be back at home on Thursday looking to pick up a win against Malone. Game time is scheduled for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
