MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Roberts Wesleyan University women's basketball team used a big second quarter and strong closing run to earn its first win of the season on Tuesday night.
The Redhawks outscored host Mansfield 23-8 in the second quarter to build a 14-point halftime lead and then outscored the Mounties 10-5 in the final 2:41 to seal a 75-68 non-conference victory.
"We found a way to win," Roberts coach Kevin Clifford said. "We made some clutch free throws and executed plays down the stretch. Basketball is a game of runs and streaks and we made runs and were able to withstand theirs."
Junior guard Georgia Haverlock recorded her second straight double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Redhawks (1-2).
Freshman Grace Galgano scored a career-high 18 points and junior Emily Palmer added a career-best 10 points. Junior guard Danielle DiCintio added nine points and six assists.
Galgano and freshman Riley Childress made key jump shots for the Redhawks late in the game and Haverlock went 3-for-4 from the free-throw line in the final 34 seconds for Roberts.
The Redhawks return to action at 3 p.m. Saturday at Mercyhurst.
