QUEENS, N.Y. – The Roberts Wesleyan men's basketball team has won three straight games and picked up its first East Coast Conference victory of the season after defeating Queens on Friday night, 73-67.
In a back-and-forth game where the lead changed hands 11 times, the Redhawks were able to break a tie game with just over three minutes to play in regulation and then hold the lead until the final whistle.
A pair of
Abou Gbane free throws gave Roberts a 65-63 advantage late in the second half which sparked a 7-0 offensive run for the Redhawks to seal the win.
"It's definitely a great feeling to come out with the win," said head coach
Mark Saladzius. "It certainly wasn't the cleanest game we've played this year, but I'm proud of the team for sticking together and grinding it out to get the road win."
Four of the starting five hit double digits in the scoring column on the night. Leading the way was junior
Ja'Kair Sanchez with 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field.
Malik Brooks finished with 15 points,
Rian Carter with 11 and Gbane with 10.
Queens was led by Jayden Seraphin with 21 points.
Roberts (Roberts (3-5, 1-0 ECC) will play at Molloy on Sunday. Tip time is set for 2 p.m. following the women's game.
