ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Senior guard
Taryn Wilson continued her hot outside shooting, sinking 4 of 8 3-point shots and scoring 18 points, as the Roberts Wesleyan College women's basketball team outlasted Queens College 67-64 in overtime Wednesday night at the Voller Athletic Center.
Sophomore guard Toni-Neely Primus scored six of her 14 points in overtime for the Redhawks (12-9, 9-6 ECC), who won their second straight game. Sophomore guard
Georgia Haverlock added 14 points and six rebounds and senior center
Dimitra Gkizani registered her ninth double-double of the season with 12 points and 15 rebounds.
Roberts jumped to an early 16-2 lead in the first quarter but needed to make some clutch plays late to complete the season sweep of Queens (3-12, 4-18). The Redhawks also defeated the Knights 78-62 on Jan. 31.
"I think that every game is going to be a battle," Roberts coach
Kevin Clifford said. "It was just a gutty win with a lot of people making plays."
The Redhawks closed overtime with a 6-2 run as Gkizani made two free throws, Neely-Primus hit a jump shot with 28 seconds left and Wilson sank two more free throws for the final margin with five seconds left. Queens had a chance to extend the game, but missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Clifford was pleased with the Redhawks' resilience and ability to make big plays, including Neely-Primus' basket from just inside the arc late in overtime.
"We had an optional shootaround this morning and I noticed that Toni was shooting with a lot of confidence," Clifford said. "That was a tough shot and a great shot."
Haverlock gave Roberts a 57-55 lead with 33 seconds remaining in regulation, but Queens made two free throws with six seconds left to force the extra session.
Wilson, who scored a career-high 27 points in a 64-62 win over the University of the District of Columbia on Saturday, and Gkizani, who has four straight double-doubles, continue to show strong senior leadership.
"They have been doing that all season long," Clifford said.
Roberts also got a boost from sophomore guard
Danielle DiCintio, who had six assists and no turnovers in 35 minutes, and junior
Nyah Johnson who contributed seven points and five assists off the bench.
It will be a quick turnaround for the Redhawks, who continue their four-game homestand at 4 p.m. Thursday with an ECC matchup against College of Staten Island at the Voller Athletic Center.
