WATERBURY, CONN. – Senior
Hunter Lemieux became the Roberts Wesleyan College school record holder for goals and points as the men's lacrosse team opened its season with a 21-12 victory over Post University on Tuesday.
Lemieux finished with four goals, bringing his career totals to 144 goals and 186 points. He eclipsed the previous marks of 142 goals and 185 points set by Dom Cianfarano from 2013-16.
Lemieux was unaware of the records until it was mentioned to him on the bus after the game.
"It's cool to have the records, but they don't happen just because of one person," Lemieux said. "Lacrosse is a team sport and it always has been. None of those goals happen without my teammates and all of the assists they have given me."
Roberts coach
Rocky Delfino said Lemieux, who was the East Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Year last season, has always been a team-first player.
"These records are not just about him," Delfino said. "I think they are a product of his dedication to the game and to the program. He is always working with other kids and helping them try to get better."
Ten players scored for the Redhawks, who overcame a 6-3 deficit after the first quarter by outscoring Post 15-5 in the middle periods. Roberts trailed 8-5 with 12:35 to play in the half before going on a 6-0 run capped by
Michael Pierog's man-down goal with 3:28 left in the second quarter.
Pierog also scored four goals and added an assist for Roberts.
Jordon Deats (3 goals, 1 assist) and
Reid Jackowski (2 goals, 2 assists) also added four points and
Nate Maloney contributed two goals and an assist.
Connor Jones,
Ryan Prine,
Mitch Streety,
Jacob Zimmerman,
Anthony Diamico and
Dan Doviak also scored for Roberts.
Roberts outshot Post 51-36 and held a 46-22 advantage in ground balls. Streety won 25 of 35 faceoffs and led Roberts with 15 ground balls.
"He did an excellent job," Delfino said. "Mitch was a blue-collar worker today and fought his way through. They were double- and triple-teaming him."
Goalkkeeper
Aidan Sheehan made seven saves for his first college win.
Lemieux broke the goal-scoring record 19 seconds into the second quarter off a feed from Jackowski and converted a feed from Maloney to give Roberts a 19-11 lead about two minutes into the fourth quarter. Although the records are nice, Lemieux is more focused on what is ahead for the Redhawks: their home opener at noon Saturday against Wheeling.
"It's a quick turnaround and we have a lot of areas where we can improve," he said. "We just want to get back at it and continue to get better."
