Women's Bowling Closes Out Season at ECC Championships

CORAM, N.Y. - The Roberts Wesleyan women's bowling team competed in the East Coast Conference Championship on March 25-26 in Long Island, N.Y. The format consisted of a qualifying round of five baker total pinfall matches, with each match-up counting as a win-loss for their record. The top 12 teams who made the cut then advanced to the double-elimination match-play bracket (Best 4 of 7 baker games moved on).

During qualifying, they suffered an early loss to Wilmington University (850-1042) before securing a close win against Chestnut Hill College (769-766). During the third match, the ladies performed slightly better, but not to their usual standard, which cost them the win against Kutztown (784-902). In match four, the Redhawks found their rhythm and put together a 902 set, but it was not enough to take down Daemen College, who posted a 933. For the final qualifying match of the day, the ladies recorded a 210 baker game and a 909 series, their best of the day, defeating Felician University (882) and finishing with a 2-3 record. Their performance was enough to earn the 11th-place seed in the tournament to move on to match-play.

In Round 1 of match-play, the ladies took on Kutztown. In game one, the Redhawks lost 185-204, before tying 167-167 in game two, then taking game three with a score of 217-191. However, the final games were all Kutztown as their opponent won the next three straight, sending RWC to the elimination bracket (1.5-4.5).

After being off for Round 2, the Redhawks came back fired up in Round 3 against Chestnut Hill. After losing the first game (162-194), the ladies won three straight with scores of 177-133, 198-128, and 215-198. In game four, the ladies struggled, losing 138-186, but regained their composure to win 174-155 in game five, securing a 4-2 win and advancing to Round 4.

In Round 4, RWC faced off against Bloomfield, which would end up being their best fought match-up of the tournament. The ladies lost 155-212 in game one, then captured game two 187-156. Game three was again consistent for RWC, but they suffered a narrow loss 189-197, before bouncing back 179-155 in game four. For game five, Bloomfield passed the ladies with ease, and they lost 169-201. With their season on the line and a must-win situation, the girls had a strong finish in game six to stay alive with a 167-147 win. Heading into the last game, the ladies gave it everything they had, but a couple of early 9-counts and another in the 9th frame gave Bloomfield the advantage, and the girls lost 167-183, eliminating them from the championship (3-4).

Sophomore Paige Barkley led the ladies during the weekend with a 19.03 pins-per frame average (190.3 game average), filling 79.5% of her frames overall.

Senior Sarah Gerken chipped in with a 17.42 pins-per frame average (174.2 game average) for the Redhawks.

RWC finishes the season with a record 33-30, their best overall record in program history since 2018-2019.
