DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Redshirt junior
Ja'Kair Sanchez scored a season-high 26 points on Friday night to lead the Roberts Wesleyan men's basketball team to a 91-88 overtime win over Mercy.
Roberts fell behind early in the overtime period as Mercy scored the first six points to take an 81-77 lead, but
Rian Carter and
Nicholas Johnson provided the spark for the Redhawks to help the team sneak out of the Neil Judge Athlete Center with a win.
Carter scored 8 of his 13 points in overtime alone. The graduate student hit a three for the Redhawks' first bucket of overtime to cut the score to 83-80. Just a minute and a half later Carter turned defense into offense after getting a steal and hitting a layup to give Roberts an 84-83 lead. After a pair of free throws by the Mavericks, Carter then responded with another triple to regain the lead for Roberts. Johnson then closed the game out with a dunk and an offensive rebound and put-back on consecutive possessions.
Johnson had six points, six rebounds, and three steals. In addition to his 13 points, Carter had eight boards, six assists, and two steals.
Sanchez played all 40 minutes and finished with 26 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Roberts had 10 different players score at least four points in the game.
Next up will be a Sunday afternoon game against STAC. The Redhawks at 3-1 in the East Coast Conference currently sit in third place in the standings. STAC is 4-0 in the ECC and 13-2 overall. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m.
