FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Roberts Wesleyan University men's soccer team staged a late rally but could not overcome Queens College in an East Coast Conference match on Saturday night.
Micah Cornfield and
Tamas Nagy scored 1:09 apart in the final five minutes to cut a three-goal deficit to one, but the Redhawks could not generate the equalizer and dropped a 4-3 decision.
"We had a chance to tie it in the waning secondts, but just couldn't pull it out," Roberts coach Scott Reber said.
Queens scored two goals in the first eight minutes before sophomore
Luke Hanes drew a foul in the penalty area in the 18
th minute. Nagy stepped to the line and delivered his ninth goal of the season to cut the Queens' lead in half.
Leo Pinto found the net twice for Queens before the Redhawks put on a charge.
Nagy found Cornfield in front and the sophomore converted from 12 yards out for his first collegiate goal with 4:54 to play. Nagy struck again just 69 seconds later when
Nathan Ferguson sent him in 1-on-1 with the keeper and he tucked the ball away to make it 4-3.
Nagy shares the ECC lead with 10 goals and is ranked second in the conference with 24 points this season.
Roberts (3-5-4, 2-2-2) sent a ball deep into the box in the closing seconds but Queens withstood the charge.
Junior
Caleb DaSilva made five saves in 61 minutes and sophomore
Eric Jewson added three in 29 minutes for Roberts.
The Redhawks return home to face Daemen in an ECC match at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
