Box Score ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The margin in playoff soccer can be extremely small.
The Roberts Wesleyan University women's soccer team came within inches of scoring the tying goal in the final 15 minutes of Sunday's East Coast Conference semifinal match against Molloy, but the Lions were able to withstand everything the top-seeded Redhawks could muster and earned a 1-0 victory to advance to the ECC Championship.
Cami Brescia served a corner kick into the box with 14:27 to play, teammate
Nevaeh Bunch ran onto the ball and sent it past the keeper, but a Molloy defender cleared the ball off of the line to keep Roberts off of the scoreboard. The Redhawks (10-2-3), who won their first ECC regular-season championship and were playing their first home playoff match since 2015 continued to press, but fourth-seeded Molloy held on.
"I am super proud of our team," Roberts coach
Sarah McClellan said. "We went out there and we played hard and we played tough and we didn't back down from anything. … It was a very good game and I thought that our team deserved better."
The only goal of the game came when Molloy's Isabella Muro converted a rebound in the 56
th minute. It was the first goal scored against Roberts since the two teams played to a 1-1 draw at Molloy on Sept. 26.
The Redhawks outshot Molloy 13-7 and put eight shots on goal.
"It's tough because we put it all out there as a team," Roberts senior captain
Gabrielle Ciambella said. "We are a family and we win together and we lose together."
The Redhawks will find out later this week if they have earned a berth in the National Christian College Athletic Association Division I National Championship. Roberts advanced to the NCCAA semifinals in 2022.
