ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Roberts Wesleyan University women's basketball team worked overtime to secure its first conference win of the season on Sunday.
Graduate student
Georgia Haverlock sank three three-pointers and scored 12 of her season-high 26 points in overtime as the Redhawks rallied to defeat Saint Thomas Aquinas College 82-78 in an East Coast Conference game at the Voller Athletic Center.
"I just let it go and it felt really good," Haverlock said. "The second one felt the same way and so did the third. Everyone was so hyped up and we all played for each other and battled and got the win."
"Georgia works hard," Roberts coach
Kevin Clifford said. "I am proud of her because of her work and because of her effort. When you put in the work, you are going to have games like this."
Haverlock opened the extra session with a three to put Roberts up 67-64 and then delivered from long distance again with 1:03 and 35 seconds remaining, giving the Redhawks (5-7, 1-3 ECC) a three-point advantage each time. After STAC missed a three, Haverlock converted two free throws to give Roberts a two-possession lead.
A three-pointer brought the Spartans within two points with 10 seconds remaining, but
Paris Anthony and Haverlock each made a free throw in the closing seconds to close out the win.
"It was a good team win," Clifford said. "I am proud of the effort and I am proud of the team. I think that it came down to players making plays."Â
Anthony came off the bench to score 18 points and
Marianna Freeman added 13 for the Redhawks. Senior guard
Danielle DiCintio added nine and freshman
Madalyn Mahoney scored six, including a three-pointer to tie the game at 64 with 4.7 seconds remaining in regulation.
Sophomore
Grace Galgano pulled down 11 rebounds and blocked two shots and DiCintio dished out five assists for Roberts. Haverlock contributed five rebounds and four assists while going 5-for-8 from beyond the arc.
Roberts made 13 threes in the game and went 9-for-12 from the free-throw line. STAC made 5 of its 11 free throws.
"I think this game is a stepping stone for us," Haverlock said. "I think it showed what we can do and will give us a lot of confidence going forward."
The Redhawks travel to Queens College for an ECC matchup at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
