Redhawks Shut Out Molloy

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Sometimes disappointment can turn into motivation.

Such was the case with the Roberts Wesleyan University men's soccer team on Saturday as the Redhawks regrouped after a difficult loss to D'Youville on  Wednesday and put together a solid effort in a 2-0 victory over Molloy in their final East Coast Conference regular-season game this season.

Jack Hopson and Micah Cornfield both scored for the Redhawks (7-6-1, 5-3 ECC), who earned their second consecutive win against the Lions (5-6-4, 3-1-3).

"We weren't happy with our performance on Wednesday and we wanted to come out today and have a positive mind-set," Roberts coach Scott Reber said. "I knew that we had the talent, we just had to put it together."

The Redhawks certainly did that on Saturday.

Hopson gave Roberts a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute. Hopson posted up a defender in the box, received a pass from Benjamin Lazcano Barros, turned and fired a quick shot past the keeper for his second goal of the season.

With Molloy applying heavy pressure in the second half, Cornfield completed a beautiful build-up with his first goal of the season. Tamas Nagy found Archie Murphy on the right side, Murphy carried the ball down the right side and sent a cross onto the foot of Cornfield who buried his shot from close range.

"It was really nice," Reber said. "We've shown time and again that we can counter against teams. Everybody did their job on that play and Micah had a beautiful finish."

Junior Eric Jewson made 10 saves to earn his sixth win of the season for Roberts.

"Eric has just been really good for us this year," Reber said. "He has good hands and makes good decisions. We are really happy with his play."

The Redhawks conclude the regular season with two non-conference road games at Bloomfield College on Monday and at Saint Anselm College on Saturday.  The first round of the ECC playoffs begins on Thursday, Nov. 7.
