Balanced Attack and Strong Serving give Volleyball a Key ECC Win

SPARKILL, NY – Four players reached double-digit kills the team served eight aces leading the Roberts Wesleyan University Women's Volleyball team to a convincing 3-1 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas College Saturday morning for an East Coast Conference (ECC) road victory for the Redhawks.

Roberts (9-5 overall, 1-2 ECC) rallied after falling 25-18 in the opening set to outlast St. Thomas Aquinas (STAC) (4-10, 0-3 ECC) 28-26 in the second set to even the score. The Redhawks dominated the final two sets by scores of 25-14 and 25-10 to close out the match.

A mid-set run for the Spartans gave the home team the early advantage with the 25-18 set win to open the match.

In the second set, Roberts held and early 15-9 lead but the Spartans battled back to tie the score at 16-16 and the teams traded points down the stretch until back-to-back kills by sophomore Camryn Karelus and senior Sydney Yanak broke a 26-26 tie and gave the Redhawks a 28-26 win to even the score.

Roberts dominated the final two sets with attack percentages of .414 and .467 and a combined 33 kills with just seven errors to close out the match.

Junior Olivia Price led the offense with 16 kills while Yanak added 13, senior Jaycee Karelus added 11, Camryn Karelus chipped in 10 and junior Morgan Verbridge added eight for the balanced offensive effort. Junior Caleigh Schroeder spread out 46 assists for the Redhawks.

Yanak had four aces and Schroeder added two to lead the strong serving effort as Roberts had eight aces in the match.

Senior Teagan Weber led the defense with 21 digs while Yanak added 12 and Schroeder 13 for the Redhawks.

Roberts continues the ECC road trip with a 12 p.m. match at Mercy Sunday in Dobbs Ferry.
