ROCHESTER, NY – Graduate student Malik Brooks scored a season high 29 points and the Roberts Wesleyan University Men's Basketball team connected on nearly 60 percent of its shots from the field as the Redhawks scored a 96-82 win over Edinboro University Tuesday night at the Voller Athletic Center.
Brooks led four players into double-digit scoring as senior Jermaine Taggart II scored 16, junior Arnardo Camacho added 14 and junior Mohamed Soumahoro chipped in 10 for the Redhawks. Camacho had a double-double as he picked up a team leading 11 rebounds and added six assists and four steals to his stat line.
A Brooks layup late in the first half gave Roberts (3-3) a 12-point lead at 43-31 but Edinboro (4-4) battled back to trim the lead to just five points before sophomore Trey Kleitz hit a driving layup at the buzzer to give the Redhawks a 49-42 lead at the break.
Edinboro tied the game at 64-64 midway through the second half but a 7-0 run capped by a Camacho basket gave Roberts some breathing room.
A jumper and a pair of free throws by Taggart four minutes later stretched the lead to 13 at 80-67 with 6:26 left to play and the Redhawks cruised to the victory.
Roberts was 21-for-34 (.61.7%) from the field in the first half and finished the game 38-for-67 (56.7%) from the field. The defense was a key with 13 steals and five blocked shots.
The Redhawks will resume play December 3 at Mansfield before opening East Coast Conference (ECC) action over the weekend at Mercy and St. Thomas Aquinas December 6 and 8.
