ROCHESTER, NY – Graduate student Georgia Haverlock scored 23 points and junior Marianna Freeman added 18 for the Roberts Wesleyan University Women's Basketball team as the Redhawks battled back from a double-digit deficit in the second half but ended up falling to Assumption University, 68-59 in the season opener and first day of the RWU Tipoff Tournament in the Voller Athletic Center.
Haverlock scored 13 of her 23 points in the first half and then capped a 14-0 run in the fourth quarter to draw Roberts (0-1) to within a basket with 1:35 left to play. Assumption (1-0) answered with a quick 3-pointer at the other end of the court to stop the run and then connected on all four free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
In the first half, Roberts connected on 16-of-27 shots and hit three 3-pointers to take a 36-26 lead into the halftime intermission.
Assumption opened the second half with a 13-2 run to take a lead.
A pair of fourth quarter 3-pointers allowed the Greyhounds to open up a 15-point advantage before the Redhawks mounted a comeback effort.
Haverlock led Roberts with her 23 points and Freeman was close behind with 18 as the rest of the team combined for 18 points.
The Redhawks will face Felician University Saturday on the second day of the season-opening tournament.
