WORCESTER, Mass. – The Roberts Wesleyan women's lacrosse team got contributions from six different goal scorers on Saturday as the Redhawks took down No. 21 Assumption, 13-11. It was the first win this season over a nationally-ranked opponent.
Annie Mulhall led all goal scorers with five goals and one assist.
Lucy Rugaber had four goals and two assists. The other goal scorers included,
Kadie Tierney,
Emma Blumenstock,
Sophia Podszebka, and
Ella Dossier.
Roberts used an explosive first quarter to help secure the win as the team scored six goals in the period. The Redhawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first five minutes of action, but Assumption responded with two goals of their own. Roberts then went on a four unanswered goal run to take a 6-2 lead.
After Assumption closed the gap early in the third quarter, the Redhawks responded with a five-goal run to take a 13-7 advantage. The Greyhounds began to cut the lead in the fourth, courtesy of three free-position goals, but it wasn't enough in the end.
"It was important for us to get off to a quick start today," said head coach
Kristin Paolini. "The offense was able to find each other today, especially in the first and third quarters and that was key for us to be able to build a lead when Assumption tried to crawl back into the game."
Shawna Lesmerises came up big for Roberts with 12 saves while also facing 14 free-position attempts to just one for the Redhawks.
"Shawna played a fantastic game today," Paolini said. "She came up huge for us in important situations and faced a lot of pressure with the amount of free-position attempts they were awarded."
Roberts (3-4) will have a tough challenge on Wednesday at home when the team hosts No. 2 West Chester. It will be the fourth top-five nationally-ranked team the Redhawks have played this season. Game time is slated for 1:30 p.m.
