Redhawks Take No. 2 West Chester to Overtime

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Roberts Wesleyan women's lacrosse team continued its challenging strength of schedule on Wednesday afternoon as the Redhawks fell in overtime to the nation's No. 2 ranked team West Chester, 8-7.

After a short delay to begin the game due to West Chester's hesitancy of snowy conditions the Redhawks took it in stride and used the early energy to gain a three-goal lead in the first quarter. Emma Blumenstock opened the scoring followed by back-to-back goals by Lucy Rugaber. Both players finished the game with two goals each.

West Chester found its way back into the game with four unanswered goals in the second quarter while also keeping Roberts scoreless.

Midway through the fourth quarter Roberts found the back of the net two times in the span of a minute to tie the game at 7-7. Annie Mulhall had the first goal off a free-position attempt and Kadie Tierney added the succeeding goal on another free-position shot.

In overtime Roberts had the first good look on the offensive side but was unable to capitalize. West Chester used a counter attack to get an open shot on net for the game-winner.

The Redhawks defensive unit helped slow down a Golden Rams offense that has scored no fewer than 14 goals in a game this season. West Chester had 24 turnovers with 11 caused by Roberts. Allison Clahane had three caused turnovers and three ground balls. Madelyn Robinson added two caused turnovers and five ground balls and Erin Quinn had two caused turnovers and two ground balls.

Roberts (3-5) will be at home again on Saturday at noon when they host Daemen for the first East Coast Conference matchup of the season.
