Women's Lacrosse Beats Daemen in Opening ECC Game

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Freshman Braelyn Evans might be one of the loudest voices coming from the sideline at any women's lacrosse game to rally her teammates, but on Saturday afternoon, Evans was the spark the team needed on the field to help the Redhawks fend off East Coast Conference opponent Daemen University to win 16-7.

Evans scored the first goal of her collegiate career in the second quarter with 6:30 left on the clock. Her goal stopped a four-goal run by Daemen that had eliminated Roberts' early 5-1 advantage. Evans goal came off a free position shot on a man-down situation. The Redhawks then rallied off three more goals in the quarter to take a 9-6 lead at the half.

"Braelyn is the loudest, craziest, most energetic on the sideline because she wants to be a supportive teammate, but today we need that same energy on the field and she stepped up," said head coach Kristin Paolini.

In the second half Roberts dominated, allowing just one goal to the Wildcats. The Redhawks outscored Daemen, 7-1 in the half.

Lucy Rugaber was the team's leading point scorer with six goals and two assists. Emma Blumenstock scored five goals with two assists. Ella Dossier had five assists on the day.

"We didn't play our best game today, but you can't discount any wins you get within the conference," said Paolini. "Our defense made some needed adjustments and played a much stronger second half."

Roberts (4-5, 1-0 ECC) will travel to play Molloy next Thursday for a 4 p.m. game. The Lions who are receiving votes in the national poll fell to D'Youville in overtime for their first conference game of the season.
