Women Fall to Glenville State for First Loss of the Year

ROCHESTER, NY – After falling behind 1-0 early in the second half, the Roberts Wesleyan Women's Soccer team applied a ton of offensive pressure in the final minutes but could not break through for the tying goal and dropped a 1-0 decision to Glenville State Wednesday afternoon at Roberts Stadium.

Glenville (2-0) scored on a header in the first six minutes of the second half to take a lead.

The Redhawks (2-1) answered with relentless offensive pressure and numerous scoring chances but could not find a way to deliver the game-tying goal.

With 26 minutes left, junior Alyssa Hackett broke free from a confrontation at the top of the box and buried a shot into the corner of the goal but a hand ball was called to nullify the goal.

Later in the period, senior Maia LaVigne broke free in the right side of the box and fired a hard shot that was deflected by the goalkeeper and bounced off the crossbar.

The most dangerous scoring chance came eight minutes later as junior Cami Brescia sent a crossing pass through the mouth of the goal to the foot of Hackett but a point-blank shot was stopped by the Pioneer keeper. The rebound landed near the top of the box and a collision there resulted in a Glenville foul inside the box for a penalty kick.

Junior Ella White lined up the kick and sent a low shot to the left of the keeper but a diving save prevented the tying score once again.

"We had some chances to score," said Head Coach Jeff Vieira. "We just needed to finish those chance and we did not do that today."

Roberts held a commanding 16-6 edge in shots with an 8-3 advantage in each half. The Redhawks also had an 8-1 edge in corner kicks.

The team will hit the road for the first time this season with a trip to Walsh University Saturday before returning home for four more home games stating with Mansfield at 6 p.m. next Wednesday at Roberts Stadium.
