ROCHESTER, NY – After a tightly contested and close first half of play as Fifth-year player Tamas Nagy notched his fifth goal of the season with a penalty kick to tie the score at 1-1, Queens College scored three times in the second half to pull away with a 4-1 victory Saturday on the Redhawks Turf Field in the East Coast Conference (ECC) opener.
Queens (2-4-0 overall, 1-0-0 ECC), the conference preseason favorite, scored midway through the first half to take an early lead.
With less than a minute to play in the first half, Nagy was tripped up in the penalty area and was awarded a penalty kick. He nailed a shot and remained perfect at 3-for-3 on penalty kicks to knot the score at 1-1.
Early in the second half, the Knights regained the lead with a goal 4:29 into the stanza to take a 2-1 edge.
Queens extended the lead with a pair of goals in a span of 2:08 midway through the second half to pull away and take a 4-1 lead.
After holding a 6-3 edge in shots in the opening period, the Knights dominated play in the final 45 minutes with a 12-0 advantage in shots. Roberts held a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
Senior Caleb DaSilva and junior Juan Daniel Espinosa Rubio combined to make seven saves in the Roberts goal.
The Redhawks will play Wednesday at Slippery Rock before returning home for Homecoming weekend and Senior Day, Saturday for an ECC match against the College of Staten Island.
