QUICK START POWERS REDHAWKS TO VICTORY IN OPENER

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Roberts Wesleyan University men's soccer coach Scott Reber gave the Redhawks high marks for their opening effort.

"They did everything that I asked them to and more, so I am really proud of the guys," Reber said after the Redhawks raced to a 3-0 victory over Walsh in a non-conference match Thursday night at Roberts Stadium.

Tamas Nagy scored three goals in the first 30 minutes to electrify the crowd and Caleb DaSilva made seven saves, including some big stops in the second half to secure the clean sheet.

"The home opener sets the tone for the rest of the season," defender Nathan Ferguson said. "I feel like we have to take pride in playing at home because this is our house and when teams come here they need to feel us."

The Redhawks made certain they got off to a fast start.

After having an apparent early goal nullified by an offside call, Nagy was taken down in the box and converted a penalty kick in the 14th minute.

The fifth-year senior from Hungary added spectacular strikes in the 25th and 29th minutes to provide Roberts with all the offense it needed.

"It was a good feeling, I was so happy," Nagy said. "The guys talked before the game and we wanted to have a strong start because that can help us later in the season. I was just excited to play."

He was also exciting to watch, using an explosive burst to elude a defender on the left sideline and delivering a nifty left-foot finish for his second goal. Nagy completed his third career hat trick with a 25-yard shot from the center of the field less than four minutes later.

"He picks his moments," Reber said. "It's not just all the time, he picks his moments and that catches some of the opponents flat-footed and he is able to take advantage of that."

The Roberts defense took advantage of some big saves by DaSilva, especially in the second half, to preserve the shutout.

"Caleb is an amazing goalkeeper," Ferguson said. "He's extremely athletic with great hands and great feet. He definitely bails us out a lot of the time."

"We've got some new faces, so we are trying some guys in different spots but I am really happy with our overall performance tonight," Reber added.

The Redhawks will host Malone in a non-conference game at 1 p.m. Saturday. The team is conducting a clothing drive for Mary Cariola Children's Center. All sizes of clothes will be accepted from preschool to high school aged children and all donations will assist students that attend the Mary Cariola Center. Fans who donate will receive free admission to the game.

"It's a good to start the season with a win, but we don't want to celebrate too much because our next game is on Saturday at 1 p.m.," Nagy said. "It's almost here and we have to make sure that everyone is healthy."
