ROCHESTER, NY – A late goal by graduate student Nathan Ferguson off a set play in the box and a scramble for the rebound was the first of the game for the Roberts Wesleyan Men's Soccer team and cut the lead in half but visiting Malone University held on for the 2-1 victory Saturday afternoon at Roberts Stadium.
Malone (2-0) scored a goal in each half with the first coming late in the first half with a shot from the top of the box. The Pioneers took a two-goal edge early in the second half and held the 2-0 lead until late in the game.
With time running out, Roberts cut the lead in half on a play in front of the Pioneer goal.
After the original shot, the Malone keeper knocked the ball toward the corner and away from the goal but a deflection off a defender found the ball on the foot of Ferguson who finished the play from just outside the goal line.
For the game, the shot totals were nearly even with Malone holding a slim 11-10 edge but the Redhawks won an 8-5 shots total in the second half.
The Redhawks had a pair of shots that beat the Malone goalie but were deflected away by Pioneer defenders in the goal mouth.
Senior Caleb DaSilva finished with four saves for Roberts.
The Redhawks will play the next two matches on the road at University of Findlay Wednesday and at Seton Hill the following Wednesday before returning home September 21 to open East Coast Conference play against Queens College at Roberts Stadium.
