Third Quarter Rally Not Enough Against District of Columbia

WASHINGTON, DC – After giving up an early lead, the Roberts Wesleyan University Women's Basketball team rallied in the thord quarter to trim the lead to 11 points but the University of the District of Columbia recovered and ran away with a 76-51 win Saturday in an East Coast Conference (ECC) game in the Nation's Capital.

Roberts (0-14 overall, 0-6 ECC) scored four early points but District of Columbia put together a 20-2 run over a majority of the first quarter to build a convincing lead in the first quarter.

The teams played an even second quarter and the Firebirds took a 37-24 lead into the halftime intermission.

In the third quarter, UDC extended the lead to 21 points at 49-28 with 6:38 left in the period.

Freshman Meaghan Doherty and senior Lauren McCrae hit back-to-back 3-pointers and junior Cristina Gonzalez-Simarro Rubio added a layup to trim the lead to 49-36. After two scoreless minutes, freshman Erin Frazier hit a short jumper to cap the 10-0 Roberts run and cut the lead to 11 points at 49-38 with 2:05 to play in the third quarter.

The Firebirds took a 54-42 lead into the final quarter. An early 12-3 run for UDC in the final quarter extended the lead and the Firebirds cruised to the 76-51 final.

Graduate student Georgia Haverlock led Roberts with 17 points while Frazier came off the bench to score 10 points and grab six rebounds. Senior Grace Dow added nine points and a team-leading seven rebounds.

Roberts returns to action Wednesday at D'Youville University before returning home for the annual Golisano Cildren's Hospital charity day Saturday against Daemen.
