Men’s Basketball Holds on for a Conference Win over Mercy

ROCHESTER, NY – Senior Jermaine Taggart II scored 26 points and junior Arnardo Camacho recorded his second triple double of the season to lead the Roberts Wesleyan University Men's Basketball team to a 99-96 win over Mercy University Friday night in an East Coast Conference (ECC) matchup at the Voller Athletic Center.

After a close first half of action the teams went into the halftime intermission tied at 40-40.

In the second half, Roberts (8-11 overall, 5-4 ECC) used a run midway through the half to build a 10-point lead and a 3-pointer by Taggart with just less than four minutes remaining gave the Redhawks a 92-82 edge.

Mercy (5-13, 4-5 ECC) rallied to score the next five points before another Taggart jumper extended the lead back to seven points with 2:45 left to play.

The Mavericks scored another six points to cut the lead to one point at 94-93 with 1:41 left.

The teams traded baskets as graduate student Malik Brooks hit a driving layup for the Redhawks and less than a minute later a pair of free throws for Brooks pushed the lead to three points.

Both teams connected on one of two free throws over the next 20 seconds and Mercy had a pair of long 3-point attempts that were off the mark before time expired for the Roberts victory.

Taggart led all scorers with his 26 points as six players from each team reached double-digit scoring totals. Sophomore Keonjay Carter came off the bench to score 19 points and Camacho added 14. Brooks scored 12 points while sophomore Nasir Hammonds and senior Ryan Garwood each scored 10. Hammonds added 10 rebounds for a double-double and Camacho led the team with 11 boards and added 10 assists for the triple double.

Camacho is tied for the national lead in triple doubles with two this season.

Roberts returns to action Sunday as St. Thomas Aquinas College come to town for an ECC matchup.
