ROCHESTER, NY – Senior Jack Hopson scored a pair of second-half goals Tuesday to lead the Roberts Wesleyan University Men's Soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Saint Michael's College in the final regular-season home game of the season for the Redhawks.
Roberts (8-1-6), ranked No. 9 in the East Region fell behind early in the second half as Saint Michael's (6-5-2), ranked No. 10 in the region, scored eight minutes into the period after a scoreless first half.
Just 1:15 later, the Redhawks were awarded a penalty kick after a foul in the box and Hopson blasted a shot into the back of the goal to level the score at 1-1.
Seven minutes later the quick-passing offense struck again as sophomore Sebastian Guerrero sent a pass forward to junior Archie Murphy on the edge of the box. Murphy redirected the ball to the front of the goal and Hopson finished the play for his second goal of the game to give the Redhawks a 2-1 lead.
Some stellar defense down the stretch including three saves by senior Eric Jewson sealed the victory for Roberts.
The best Purple Knights scoring opportunity came with 5:15 remaining in the game as a crossing pass came in front of the Roberts goal and Jewson came up with a save on a point-blank shot to preserve the one-goal lead.
Jewson finished with eight saves including six in the second half.
Roberts (3-0-3 ECC) will finish the regular season with a pair of East Coast Conference (ECC) games at St. Thomas Aquinas and Queens on the next two Saturdays. The Redhawks are third in the conference standings with 12 points while Queens (16 points/5-0-1) is leading and St. Thomas Aquinas (15 points/5-1-0) is second.
