SPARKILL, NY – Senior Luke Hanes redirected a corner kick and freshman Louis Ferrari scored while fellow senior Eric Jewson made nine saves to lead the Roberts Wesleyan University Men's Soccer team to a 1-0 road victory over St. Thomas Aquinas College Saturday to clinch at least a second-place finish in the final ECC Standings with one game remaining.
The final game will be a battle for the regular-season conference title as Roberts (9-1-6, 4-0-3 ECC) travels to Queens for the regular-season finale next weekend.
The victory pushed the Redhawks into a tie with STAC (6-6-2, 5-3-0 ECC) but the Spartans finished their schedule and would lose a head-to-head tiebreaker with Roberts.
Against STAC, Hanes scored early in the second half as junior Cooper Kerridge lined up and delivered the corner kick to the front of the goal where Hanes redirected the ball to Ferrari for teh only goal of the game.
The Redhawks earned the win with strong defensive play as the Spartans held a 25-9 shots advantage and a 9-2 edge in shots on goal. Jewson finished with nine saves including five in the second half.
The Redhawks travel to Queens College next weekend to wrap up the regular season with a 2 p.m. game at Queens.
