ROCHESTER, NY – Freshmen Jada Mushat and Aniyah Jones combined for 53 points to lead the Roberts Wesleyan University Women's Basketball team to a come-from-behind 82-78 victory over Ursuline College Saturday afternoon in the Voller Athletic Center.
Mushat led the team with 28 points including five 3-pointers and Jones added 25 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field. Senior Cristina Gonzalez-Simarro Rubio added 11 points, nine rebounds four assists and three blocked shots for the Redhawks (2-4).
Ursuline was led in scoring by Kailey Minch who scored 25 points but was limited to 3-for-13 shooting from 3-point range.
"Jada and Aniyah were fantastic today," said Head Coach Kevin Clifford. "I think the key stats of the day were points in the paint (34) and assists. We had 20 assists and when we share the ball like that we have the balance we need to be successful."
Mushat was hot from the start with a pair of 3-pointers in the first minute of action to give Roberts the early lead.
The Arrows battled back and took a 16-15 lead late in the quarter but Mushat scored the last seven Redhawk points in the period to take a 23-22 lead into the first break.
Ursuline went on a run late in the second period and the Arrows led 41-34 at halftime.
The arrows built a double-digit lead at 54-43 with 5:04 remaining in the third quarter before Jones and Gonzalez-Simarro combined the for next seven points to trim the lead.
A late jumper by Ursuline gave the visitors a five-point lead before freshman Sarah Seyfang hit a layup, earned a steal at the other end of the court and nailed a pair of free throws to spark a Roberts run.
Mushat scored at the buzzer of the third period to give Roberts a 61-60 lead.
The freshman continued the momentum into the fourth period with a jumper, a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws to start the quarter and continue the run for the Redhawks. Seyfang added a layup and a short jumper before Ursuline finally scored its first points of the quarter with a 3-pointer at 6:19.
A layup by sophomore Erin Frazier with 6:01 remaining gave Roberts a nine-point lead at 74-65 before Minch scored five straight points for the Arrows to narrow the lead.
Jones added three baskets down the stretch while Mushat and sophomore Meaghan Doherty hit free throws for the Redhawks to seal the victory.
"It was a team win today," said Clifford. "A collective effort from everyone that played for a key win before we start conference play."
The Redhawks open East Coast Conference (ECC) play next weekend with games at Molloy University Friday and at Queens College Sunday.
