ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Roberts Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team took on its third Top-10 opponent of the season when it hosted 10
th-ranked Adelphi University on Wednesday afternoon at Redhawks Field.
The host Redhawks jumped out to an early four-goal lead but the Panthers used a four-goal spurt of their own bridging the third and fourth quarters to earn a 16-13 non-conference victory.
"I liked the overall grit and energy that we showed on the field," Roberts coach
Kristin Paolini said. "They were aggressive and they never quit."
Junior
Ella Dossier registered six assists to lead the Redhawks (1-5) while
Kadie Tierney,
Alison Dioguardi and
Annie Mulhall each scored three times.
Senior
Emma Blumenstock scored two goals and two assists to move into third place on Roberts' career scoring list with 209 points. Blumenstock also collected four draw controls.
Junior midfielder
Emma Taylor was all over the field for the Redhawks, scoring a goal, adding two assists, scooping three ground balls and snaring nine draw controls.
Dioguardi scored twice in the first six minutes and Taylor and
Lia MacDougall also scored to give Roberts a 4-0 lead with 4:51 to play.
Adelphi scored the next six goals and took a 6-5 lead into the half. Mulhall scored twice - once with seven seconds left in the half and again 1:13 into the third quarter - to pull the Redhawks even at 6, but Adelphi answered with a 3-0 run to go up 9-6.
Dioguardi, who also added an assist, Mulhall and Tierney scored for Roberts to make it 9-9, but a 4-0 run by the Panthers placed the Redhawks in catch-up mode.
Roberts pulled within two goals twice in the fourth quarter, the last time with 1:46 to play, but the Panthers held on to prevail.
Senior
Shawna Lesmerises was strong in goal for Roberts with 13 saves.
"I was really proud of the defense today," Paolini said. "We made Adelphi work for every shot they got."
The Redhawks host Assumption University at 1 p.m. Sunday on Redhawks Field.
