Tierney, Dioguardi Power Redhawks Past Molloy

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Kadie Tierney and Alison Dioguardi both scored five goals as the Roberts Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team opened its East Coast Conference season with a 15-12 victory over Molloy on Saturday.

Tierney scored three goals in a 1:36 span bridging the third and fourth quarters and Dioguardi capped the 4-0 run with an unassisted goal less than a minute later as Roberts (2-6, 1-0 ECC) built a 13-8 lead with 13:02 to play.

"I think that the leadership group does a great job of allowing the girls to grow into their positions and opportunities," Roberts coach Kristin Paolini said. "Today, Kadie and Alison were ready for it."

Tierney added three assists to go finish the day with career highs in points and goals. Dioguardi's career-best five goals came on five shots.

Emma Blumenstock added two goals, two assists and four draw controls and Lia MacDougall had two goals and four draw controls for Roberts.

Emma Taylor paced the Redhawks with six ground balls and Shawna Lesmerises made six saves for Roberts.

Roberts built a 3-0 lead after the first quarter and led 6-5 at the half. Roberts led 9-9 before Tierney's tally started the decisive run late in the third quarter.

The victory was welcomed by the Redhawks, who entered the game on a two-game losing streak.

"We know that we have the athletic ability and the skills, but this was a game that showed us that we have the toughness," Paolini said.

The Redhawks wrap up their five-game homestand with an ECC game against D'Youville at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
