Close Loss in Championship Ends Bowling Season

SINKING SPRING, PA – After winning three matches Saturday to qualify for the Championship rounds of the East Coast Conference (ECC) Tournament, the Roberts Wesleyan University Women's Bowling team continued to pull off dramatic wins but ended up falling in a close Championship Final to top-seeded Kutztown University.

Roberts started the day with an elimination match against Bryant University and pulled off a thrilling 4-3 win with sophomore Rebecca Spry providing the heroics again.

The Redhawks won the first two Baker matches 178-157 and 191-178. Bryant trimmed the lead with a win in the third game but Roberts took a 3-1 lead with a 245-235 victory in the fourth game.

Bryant battled back to win the fifth game and won a slim 200-199 game six to force the seventh game for the match.

Roberts trailed by three pins entering the 10th frame and Spry delivered a three-strike performance to clinch the game and match with a 225-217 win.

The win advanced the Redhawks to the Tournament Final against Kutztown.

In the first set of games, Roberts won a 972-919 traditional match to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Freshman Kaylee Stephens rolled a 237 and finished the game with five consecutive strikes. Junior Amelia Ponto opened the game with three strikes and finished with a pair of strikes and a spare for a 223.

In the second set of games, Kutztown posted a 1021-923 win in Baker scoring total pin fall to even the overall match score 1-1.

The final set of games was a Baker best-of-seven format.

Roberts won the first game 174-146 but Kutztown won the next two games to take a 2-1 lead. The fourth game ended in a rare 192-192 tie as each team earned a half point.

Kutztown won the next game, 175-152 to take a 3 1/2 – 1 1/2 lead but the Redhawks battled back again to post a 212-191 win in the next game thanks to another three-strike effort in the 10th frame by Spry.

In the final game, Kutztown won a tight 192-190 game to clinch the match and the ECC Tournament title.
